Christmas sweaters she'll want to wear

The Christmas sweater may be a cultural touchstone, but not all of its associations are positive. Years of sweater parties and scratchy, hand-knit gifts from Aunt Violet have turned the Christmas sweater into a punch line.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s completely possible to wear a comfortable, warming, and festive sweater without the least bit of irony.

For starters, consider the Fair Isle sweater. Fair isle knits have a vibrant pattern that’s closely associated with winter, but are free of snowflakes or reindeer. A cashmere fair isle sweater can be worn to any sweater party you may be invited to, but is versatile enough to make your ski trip packing list, too.

An even easier option is a cardigan sweater. Cardigans feel like an instant match for the holiday season, thanks to their laid-back, cozy nature. They don’t come with an instant mug of hot cocoa, but they certainly make a great match to one. Cotton cardigans are a great layering option, and cashmere cardigans can bring extra warmth to chilly evenings. While there’s no way to go wrong with a solid cardigan, a cardigan in a pattern like argyle or Blackwatch plaid dials up the festive factor with ease.

Cashmere lends itself to the holidays as well, thanks to its soft feel and generous warmth. While crewneck cashmere sweaters and V-neck cashmere sweaters are evergreen options, turtleneck cashmere sweaters and cashmere sweater ponchos double down on cozy holiday appeal. In our minds, any cashmere sweater can be considered a Christmas sweater.

But for all the praise we’ve given to solid or more subtly patterned Christmas sweaters, we’d be lying if we didn’t say that boldly patterned Christmas sweaters still have a special place in our hearts. We advocate for rocking a sweater that features a wreath, wrapped presents or a bike-riding Santa Claus, with once crucial caveat: Supima® cotton.

Supima cotton is smooth and lightweight, and never scratchy or bulky. That makes it much easier to pull off even a downright silly pattern—like a cow with a bright-red Rudolph nose—because of its smoother, tighter knit. Even better, the ease and comfort of Supima cotton can turn what may have otherwise been a just-for-one-party Christmas sweater into a new winter wardrobe staple.
