Completing the set: Making the most of flannel sheets

So you’re the proud owner of a brand new set of Lands’ End flannel sheets – now what? Maximizing your flannel sheeting experience is important, and there are plenty of options for you to pair with your new flannel sheets. Don’t fret, though, we’re here to help guide you through some of those options, and soon you’ll be all snuggle-tastic in your cozy, flannel-filled bed.

Start at the beginning

Let’s think from the ground up, here. The best way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your flannel sheets is to have the most comfortable memory foam mattress you can find. The best memory foam mattresses have gel-infused memory foam that is supportive and conforms to the body’s contours. Breathable layers of foam and fabric allow for optimal temperature regulation while you sleep, making sure you don’t overheat.

If you’re not quite feeling like investing in a whole new mattress, you might consider a memory foam bed topper or a mattress pad for your bed. Mattress toppers add an extra layer of comfort to your bed, and a protective layer for the mattress itself against spills. Like a memory foam mattress, a good mattress pad or topper will also help keep you cool and comfortable all night.

The great debate

Part of finding the best match with your flannel sheets will require you to answer the question: Duvet, or comforter? People rarely fall in the middle of this debate, and those who have opinions tend to stand their ground pretty firmly. You may have an opinion about this debate already, but in case you are new to the bedding game, let’s talk about these two sides for a moment.

A duvet is like a big fluffy cloud that sits on top of your bed. They’re often filled with down or another synthetic insulator. A duvet cover is like a giant pillowcase that wraps around the duvet and is often printed or woven with decorative patterns. The advantage of using a duvet cover is that you can change it out seasonally or to match changing decorative schemes. Here at Lands’ End we make duvet covers in a variety of patterns. What’s more, we even have flannel duvet covers for those of you who want to double-down on the flannel.

A comforter is a more traditional blanket, often featuring quilted stitching, and can be filled with down, cotton, or another artificial insulator. For those who like to snuggle with a blanket, the comforter is the way to go. Comforters are more permanent choices, as they aren’t changed out as easily as duvet covers, but their quilted stitching and textures are impossible to replace with a duvet.

Finish off your bed with some throw pillows, and you’re all set. Flannel sheets are a real joy in the winter, and a savior for cold feet. A few prudent choices here and there can make all the difference in getting the most out of those new and wonderful flannel sheets.
