How to Care for Your Skin at Any Age

How to Care for Your Skin at Any Age

No matter what your age, it’s important to take proper care of your skin. It’s never too early—or too late—to practice good skin care and protect your body’s largest organ against damage. We’ve put together some information to help you keep your skin healthy, along with our picks for some of the summer’s most stylish swimsuits.

Sunscreen Is a Must

One of the easiest ways to protect your skin is by wearing sunscreen every day. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF), daily use of sunscreen with SPF 15 can reduce your risk of certain types of skin cancer by 40 to 50 percent. The SCF recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s water-resistant or waterproof. If it’s cloudy, slather on your sunblock regardless, because UV rays can still reach your skin.

Sun-Protection Swimwear

The SCF also recommends swimsuits and apparel with sun protection. It rates any apparel with UPF 50 as having excellent protection—the level of UPF you’ll find with Lands’ End Skin Cancer Foundation–approved swimwear. Some of the styles to consider include the following:

Tugless Tank One-Piece

If you want a one-piece swimsuit with UPF 50 that flatters every figure, check out the Tugless Tank swimsuit. As its name suggests, this classic bathing suit is made to fit perfectly all summer. It can be ordered with or without light-control lining, and it’s made from chlorine-resistant fabric infused with Lycra® Xtra Life™ spandex. The lower leg openings provide more coverage, and the soft-cup bra delivers support and light shaping.

Tummy Control V-Neck

This swimsuit is made with Slendertex® fabric to provide a gentle smoothing effect. The V-neck accentuates your bust, while the skirt-style overlay keeps your thighs covered. This universally flattering swimsuit style comes in a range of colors and prints, so you can find one you’ll love to wear. If you want a little more coverage than the V-neck provides, check out the Grecian-style swimsuit.

Tummy Control Swim Dress

Another option approved by the SCF is the tummy control swim dress. Like the other swimwear profiled here, it comes in sizes to fit every body and provides UPF 50. This swimsuit offers ample coverage, and its control lining creates a streamlined appearance. The scoop neck and double straps also make this swim dress style a stylish choice for summer.

Zip-Front One-Piece

If you plan on swimming or playing sports this summer, you can’t go wrong with a zippered high-neck swimsuit. These suits are also good for post-mastectomy wear because they’re comfortable to put on and take off, and you can find them with prosthesis pockets and removable soft cups.

Modest Tankini

There are plenty of tankini options that the SCF endorses. If you want a swimsuit with the coverage of a short-sleeved shirt, the modest tankini top is one such style. Its all-around bra has soft cups sewn in, so they won’t slip out of place. This tankini top also has gentle shirring to enhance every figure. You can wear it with any style of tankini bottoms for a custom fit and look. These are just some of the swimsuits that are approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation. There are plenty of others, including those for men and kids.

Cover-Ups With Sun Protection

In addition to swimwear with UPF, there are beach cover-ups that also have it. These pieces come in a variety of styles ranging from sporty to chic. One versatile cover-up is the Ruffle Hem Sleeveless Swim Cover-up Wrap Dress.

This style provides the sun protection you need with a decorative ruffle hem and shirred wrap waist—with interior ties for a perfect fit. If you like a simpler design with even more coverage, consider cover-up pants with a women’s rash guard shirt. You can slip these separates on after swimming and wear them almost anywhere for sun protection and beachy style.

Clothing With Sun Protection

There’s also clothing that has UPF 50 for covered areas. One versatile piece is the moisture-wicking knit women’s polo, made from a blend of polyester, rayon/modal, and a touch of spandex. It has fashion-forward features like tree-top side vents and a self-collar, so you can wear it almost anywhere. Pair one of these polos with capri yoga pants or an active knit skort with UPF for a breezy summer look that’s casual and comfortable.

Other Skincare Tips

In addition to wearing swimwear and clothing with sun protection, another thing you can do to protect and care for your skin is to visit your dermatologist for a regular checkup. If you have questions about skin care products, your doctor can direct you to the right formulas for your skin and provide more information about skincare that’s suited to your age and skin type.

Taking good care of your skin is an investment that takes minimal effort. By wearing sunscreen and choosing apparel with UPF, you’re off to an excellent start.
