Tips for Keeping Your Raincoat Sparkling Clean

Spring is all about smart layers. That means your raincoat, water-resistant jackets, fleece, sweaters, and more will be your best friends during these days when the temperature fluctuates. Since you’ll be turning to your trusty rain jacket often, find out how to keep it sparklingly clean all season long with these simple tips!

Shake It Off

Simple dust and debris can make your jacket look dingy, so keep your coat looking fresh by making sure it is free of dust and debris each time you wear it. Gently shake your men’s or women’s rain jacket off before you come inside or in the mudroom. If needed, use a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush to lightly brush away any loose dust or debris.

Spot Clean Your Coat Regularly

Keeping small areas clean can go a long way in making sure your jacket or fleece jacket, too!)

Lightly Dry Your Coat When It Gets Wet or Damp

If you’re tired after a long day at school or the office, or just want to curl up in your cozy pants or leggings after a long walk home from the bus station or a wet bike ride, chances are the last thing you want to do is some raincoat care. However, it’s a big mistake to stuff your wet or damp coat away in the coat closet as soon as you take it off. To avoid potential problems like musty smells, mold, or mildew, use a clean towel to gently dry your coat off as well as possible. Hang it on a clothes hanger or drying rack and allow it to dry in an open space with plenty of ventilation. Only stow it away in the closet once it is fully dry.

Wash as Often as Needed

You’ll also need to completely wash your women’s raincoat regularly. You can either do this in the washing machine on a gentle cycle or hand wash as dictated by the care instructions on the coat’s tag. Always follow the care instructions to prevent damage. Consider how often you wear your coat and for what activities to determine a washing schedule:

  • Frequent use and wearing during exercise — as often as once per week or as needed
  • Daily or several times a week — about every one to three weeks
  • A few times a week for school, work, or errands — about four to six weeks
  • Light use — about every two months
  • Occasional use — once or twice per seasons

You’ll also want to make sure you wash and thoroughly dry your raincoat before storing it away for the season. In most cases, dryers and irons are not recommended for raincoats as they can harm the material.

Keep Your Coat Fresh In-Between Wears

Even if you don’t need to spot clean or wash your coat, you can still keep it extra fresh in between regular wears and washings with some simple tricks.

  • Store them properly — Hang on a hanger designed for coats, and allow enough room between your raincoat and other items like winter coats, so it can breathe and won’t become wrinkled.
  • Check your pockets — Items like errant wrappers or crumbs could keep your coat from being as fresh and clean as possible. Check pockets and lightly empty them out and/or shake them to remove any dust or dirt.
  • Wipe down the zipper or fasteners — Your coat’s zipper, fasteners, or buttons may get a lot of use, and any oils or dirt from your hands could be transferred there. Use a warm, damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the zippers or fasteners from time to time.
  • Check the collar — Similarly, facial oils, lotion, or makeup could leave smudges or stains on a coat’s collar. Check it periodically, and spot clean as needed to keep it looking its best.
  • Use closet fresheners — Use closet fresheners like baking soda, cedar chips, or commercial products to keep moisture at bay and keep the coat closet (and its contents) smelling great.
  • Try fabric refreshers — Spray your rain jacket with a fabric refresher in-between uses to keep it smelling great.
