How To Wash A Men's Down Jacket

When it's freezing outside, you need a warm men's down jacket and a down vest from Lands' End for layering. Packed with the best feathers we can find, they trap heat without adding bulk. Your jacket and vest will also last for years with proper care, so take a moment and learn how to wash and dry them.

Your coat should be washed on your machine's warm setting. Always use a special detergent made for down, and spot treat any stubborn marks with stain remover. After one cycle, wash it again without adding detergent to ensure it's totally rinsed clean.

Afterwards, throw your men's down coat in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls and put it on a low-heat setting. The balls will gently pummel the down, removing lumps so it becomes smooth and puffy. When the cycle finishes, check your jacket and keep running it in the machine until fully dry.

Alternately, you can gently squeeze excess water from your coat and lay it flat to air dry. However, this can take 24 to 48 hours, depending on the air temperature and size of the coat. You'll also need to repeatedly fluff it up to prevent clumping.

There are also some handy don'ts to remember when cleaning your warmest down jacket. Never expose it to dry cleaning chemicals or fabric softener. Don't wring your men's winter jacket when it's wet, and avoid putting it in a top-loading washing machine with an agitator, which may be too rough.
